Bhootha Gana.

The gana or bhutagana are attendants of Shiva. South indian temples typically have them perched at the edge of the temple walls. Completed over the memorial day long weekend! 

Madhvacharya at Pajaka Kshetra.

Prathima of Shri Madhvacharya (1238–1307 CE) consecrated by Shri Vadirajatheertha at the formers birth place (Pajaka) near Udupi. 

Sripuranthan Ganesha.

Mostly of Vijayanagar / Nayak / Wodeyar origins. 

Vighnaharta

Vinayaka as seen in the Deva Goshta (niche) at Subramanya shrine inside the Brihadeeshwarar Temple - Thanjavur. Found my lost Mojo!

First attempt at doing oil painting, turned out ok. :) 

Vaduvur Ramar -1

First attempt at painting the processional deities of Sri Kodhandaramar temple at Vaduvur.
Despite long hours(almost 3 weekends) I messed up the backdrop and also the detailing.
Disappointed with the outcome. More practice/patience needed I suppose.

Brihadeeswarar Temple : Stone elephants -1

Posting after a long break. Based off a sculpture at Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur.

Inside the temple complex is a subsidiary shrine dedicated to Subramanya, a temple built by later Nayak kings of Thanjavur. This hand railing leading to the temple depicts a rouge (or war ?) elephant capturing a horse rider. The fate of the victim and the subsequent drama is sculpted on the other hand railing. (Hopefully my next post).

We were fortunate to have found a volunteer guide, who showed us these hand railings in the right order and explain why they were unique. :).

The Big temple is a must visit for anyone interested in art! :)

What to paint?

After ruining innumerable paintings and staring at a blank canvas for an agonizingly long time... I finally broke the jinx today!

Inspired by a Norman Rockwell painting.

Having the time (weekends) but not being able to paint anything can be really frustrating.

Hope to do better in the upcoming weeks.

Subrahmaṇya

Inspired by an outstanding Chola Bronze at the Chennai Egmore Museum. Subrahmaṇya was the generalissimo of the gods, often considered the best of warriors. Marathon 15 hours painting right after end semester.

Delphic Sibyl

From a work of similar name by Michelangelo. I continue to experiment with watercolors. Also I have a new website under trial run. I am hoping for some feedback from you folks about the new site. www.prasadr.com

Court house, Lafayette

Done using water colors on paper. To Lafayette folks, yes this is supposed to resemble the building shown here.

The courthouse at Lafayette is one of the more good looking buildings. Yesterdays positive temperature reminded me of how awesome Lafayette can get at times! A Tribute to this weird, desolate but wonderful town. Lafayette I will miss you...

Manikkavacakar

A minister to the Pandya king Varagunavarman II (c. 862 C.E. – 885 C.E.), he lived in Madurai. His work is also called the Tiruvacakam, a book of Shaiva hymns. More on this subject here
